For millions of Canadians, the name Terry Fox brings to mind the picture of a young man, with one good leg and artificial one, running along the Trans-Canadian highway.
At 18, Terry Fox's right leg was amputated because he had bone cancer. When he was in the hospital, he saw the suffering and pain of others who suffered from cancer. He started The Marathon of Hope.It was a coast-to-coast run in Canada. He wanted to make people realise the need to support cancer research.Along the way he would ask for a C$1 donation from each Canadian to raise funds for cancer research.
On 12 April 1980, Fox started his run by first dipping his artificial leg into the Atlantic Ocean .He ran 42km every day.Unfortunately, on 1 September 1980,Fox was forced to stop his run as the cancer had spread to his lungs. He had raised more than C$23 million by then.He died in 1981.
Isadore Sharp, the chairman and president of Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts, was inspired by Fox's courage. He organised the Annual Terry Fox Run in September 1981.The run would raise funds for cancer research.
